John Baumann CPA PC began in 1993 in one of the two bedrooms of an old 1918 craftsman style bungalow in the Rose City neighborhood of Portland. Working from home back then was very much the exception to the rule but my budget was limited. My goal was to work more directly with individuals whom had a direct interest in their own money and financial success. Previously, out of college in 1986, I started with an international public accounting firm performing audits of financial statements for very large public and private companies. While this was invaluable professional experience, I did not feel like I was making a meaningful contribution to individual lives. Accordingly, my career path led increasingly to smaller professional contexts in search of more personal connection. Living and working in an older home in an older neighborhood inspired an interest in both and a second career seemed to emerge - improving my home and garden for enjoyment and for investment. After a number of years and numerous DIY projects later, most of the house became devoted to office space and my personal life became relegated to living spaces added in the basement. During 2003, having met my life partner, my business was displaced from home to make space for her and our intended family. An investment was made in another old bungalow in the Hollywood District which was gutted and renovated into professional office space where I continued to grow business for over a decade, serving over 200 clients and preparing over 400 tax returns annually. In 2016, struggling with unremittent exhaustion from too many stressful deadlines, I was compelled to transition my practice to another CPA firm for recuperation and to follow fresher energy in my second career, which included real estate investment, improvement and property management as well as helping like minded folks with private loans to pursue similar activities. Presently, having accomplished goals in these endeavors, I have resumed CPA work on a seasonal, part-time basis in accordance with a more specific service objective - one that optimally bundles core small business accounting services into a high quality, affordable and personal one-stop offering. Consistent with its humble beginnings, John Baumann CPA PC operates once again from our current century old home in the Laurelhurst neighborhood. Of course, there are always a number of DIY projects in process.
